Professor Yiu-Wing Mai is Distinguished Chair Professor of Composites Science and Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Emeritus University Chair at The University of Sydney. He is a globally recognised materials scientist and member of several leading academies, including the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. His research spans fracture and fatigue of polymer nanocomposites, flame retardancy and functional materials. He developed the Essential Work of Fracture theory, now adopted as ISO 23524:2022, and has delivered major industrial advances in fibre cement, nanocomposite coatings and composite manufacturing.
